Asus Vivobook S15 – A MacBook killer?

Asus is dominating the laptop market with its range of laptop series like Zenbook, Eeebook, RoG (republic of gamers) and the Vivobook. The Vivobook is a premium series of laptop which includes high performance everyday use laptops. Last year Asus lunched the VivoBook S15 (S510UN) in India.

Let’s checkout some of the eye-catching features of Asus vivobook S15 and whether it’s worth buying?

Design

The first time I saw this laptop I fell in love with the sleek design and those ridiculously small bezels.

2017 was the year of bezeless smartphones. Asus implemented this in their laptop series. The vivobook S15 has a NanoEdge bezel which is just 7.8mm thin and has 80% screen to body ratio which is rare in laptops. iPhone X has 82.9 percent screen to body ratio so just imagine.

Coming to the design, it is 17.9mm thin which is not the thinnest laptop, but it is not an ultra-book it is a high-performance everyday laptop.

Also, you are getting 3 USB A ports, an HDMI, a card reader slot, headphone jack and a USB C, so totally worth the extra mm’s.

It comes with a full HD display with a wide 178° viewing angle. Talking about the price of base model, most of laptop under that price range don’t offer a full HD display.
The best part of the display is it’s non reflective and gets bright enough so that you can use it outside.

Asus is know for its build quality so the build quality is great. The back led is made up of aluminum alloy.

Keyboard

Most of us spend time in drafting some documents and replying to emails, so Asus really spent some time in designing that keyboard. It is a Chiclet-style key design keyboard which means the keys are in the shape of small squares with rounded corners and they are evenly spaced which makes it super comfortable to type on.

Obviously, most of us prefer to use a laptop at night so the keyboard is backlit and it gets decently bright to type in dark environments.

Portability

It just weighs 1.7 kgs(3.7 pounds) which makes it lightweight to carry around.  So Asus Vivobook S15 is perfect for YouTubers and entrepreneurs who travel a lot and don’t want to compromise in performance.

It is an everyday laptop with the compactness of an ultra-book.

Battery

Portability is not enough if battery life sucks, but surprisingly the battery life on the Asus vivobook S15 was amazing. It gives up to 8 hours of local 4k video playback on a single charge. Thanks to the power efficient processor.

It supports fast charging which charges 60% in just 49 minutes.

Performance

It comes with an i5 and i7 latest 8th generation processors which are 60% more powerful and power efficient than the 7th generation processors.

The best part is it comes with both a 128GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD which was my dream come true. SSD has faster read and write speed so we could boot windows quickly and have faster app launch time.

Moreover, you get a one terabyte hard disk so that you can store all the data you want. Both SSD and HDD are expandable up-to 512GB and 2 TB respectively.

Note, the SSD is not included in the base model, although there is space so you can upgrade it.

Graphics

Coming to the graphics performance, it comes with NVidia GeForce MX 150 GPU which helps in video editing (even 4k) and gaming. So if you are much into video editing then you can get buttery smooth performance without any frame lags.

Coming to the gaming performance, it was not designed to be a gaming laptop, but you can play most of the high-end games in medium graphics settings. Yes, it was able to handle GTA 5 smoothly.

Also, It does not heat with heavy usage as it uses Asus IceCool technology that keeps the temperature under 35-degrees.

Touchpad & Fingerprint Scanner

It supports Windows precision touchpad which means you can use various gestures making it easy to switch applications. The touchpad is large enough so that you could use all the gestures and it also has the ability to avoid accidental palm presses.

One of the best features of Asus vivobook S15 is it comes with a fingerprint scanner which works with Windows Hello login feature. This makes it very fast and convenient to log in.
