The latest of all, Apple’s iPhone 11 is out but still, there are a lot of users stuck to the old iPhone 5 originally running on iOS 6. Apple has clearly warned these iPhone 5 users that they should update the OS to iOS 10.3.4 latest by November 3 this year.
It’s promising to see that Apple is still providing updates to a 7-year-old product. While Android Pie only runs on 10.4% on all Android devices.
If users fail to update iPhone 5 to 10.3.4, they would no longer be able to use the Apple App Store, iCloud, email, web, etc. The update was already issued by Apple in July for some early models of the iPhone and iPad. There is now an issue with GPS rollover due to which the iPhone 5 will be affected by midnight UTC on 3 rd November 2019. This time rollover issue has already started affecting other brands since 6 April 2019.
Apple in its warning message has stated that “If updates are not performed in time, users will be required to back up and restore using a Mac or PC in order to update because over-the-air software updates and iCloud Backup will not work.”
Apple support document reads as follows –
“Starting just before 12:00 a.m. UTC on November 3, 2019, iPhone 5 will require an iOS update to maintain accurate GPS location and to continue to use functions that rely on correct date and time including App Store, iCloud, email, and web browsing. This is due to the GPS time rollover issue that began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019. Affected Apple devices are not impacted until just before 12:00 a.m. UTC on November 3, 2019”
The message contains the link to update iOS 10.3.4 version instantly. Apple has explained that the GPS time rollover issue is going to affect many Apple devices. So, it becomes necessary to update the devices running on older iOS versions.
The list of affected devices includes –
- iPhone 5 (As mentioned above)
- 4th generation iPad with Wifi and cellular.
- iPhone 4S.
- 1st generation iPad with mini Wifi and cellular.
- iPad 2 with Wifi & CDMA cellular.
- 3rd generation iPad with Wifi and cellular. (This can be updated to iOS 9.3.6)
However, the GPS rollover issue will not affect new models of iOS, iPad touch models, and iPad models with Wifi only. Though there are multiple models in the list, Apple emphasizes to update Apple iPhone 5 because according to Apple “Maintain an accurate GPS location and to continue to use functions that rely on the correct date and time.”
Also, only iPhone 5, if not updated by 3 November, has to mandatory use PC and Mac-based backup and restore approach. It won’t support iCloud backup and other over-the-air software.
Here are the quick steps to check if your iPhone 5 is updated or not,
- Go to the ‘Settings’ app on your iPhone 5.
- Further, go to General > about.
- Tap on the ‘Software Version’.
If it doesn’t show iOS 10.3.4, you should update it as soon as possible to continue enjoying Apple services.
